[Based on the Project Idea Note of November 2008]
The objective of Promaré S.A. is to develop a jatropha curcas plantation of a surface of at least 2 000 ha in Mali from 2009 on, and to construct a production unit to extract 3 000 tons of oil and 7 000 tons of press cake per year from the grains of the plant. Once this first step is finalised, Promaré S.A. will increase its production capacity to 10 000 hectares. The oil is a substitute fuel for fossil fuel diesel. The press cake is an excellent fertiliser and biofuel.
Why a Jatropha project in Mali?
Jatropha is a plant well-known by Malians as it grows abundantly in the country. It does not endanger food crops. The grains are rich in oil, a substitute product for fossil fuel diesel.
Jatropha curcas L. in Mali
- Jatropha curcas grows on barren or semi-barren land and, in consequence, does not endanger food crops. In addition, due to its roots, this plant has the virtue of transforming dry and barren land into fertile land;
- Contrary to colza and sunflower, jatropha curcas is a frugal tree that is planted once to then last more than 40 years and each year produces grains without the need to prepare the fields, to seed, or to fertilise;
- Jatropha curcas plantations combat desertification and soil erosion while augmenting arable surfaces;
- Press cake, stemming from pressed grains, is an excellent natural fertiliser and can also be used as biofuel, two products that are rare in Africa but important to the development of all emerging countries of which the economy mainly depends on agriculture;
- On the local level, this plant contributes to improving the living conditions of underprivileged populations by generating income by seizing the benefits of this plant and through the use of its oil.
