Description of the Project :

The project aims to implement the planting of 500 ha of eucalyptus (principally) and local essences for the improvement of marginal land unsuitable for agriculture.

The project is in line with small-scale CDM project activities, and aims at a community approach based on local development, in partnership with the rural town and village associations.

It is located in the region of Analamanga, 20 km south of Antananarivo, in the town of Antanetikely that stretches over approximately 6 500 hectares. The town population has approximately 11 000 inhabitants split in 13 fokontany (traditional Malagasy villages). The principal activities are rice production, fruit and vegetable farming as cash crops (in shallows) and for subsistence (manioc, pineapple). The growing is limited to draught animal maintenance for ploughing.

The tanety (upper slopes and hills for grassland vegetation) are marginal and degraded lands, unsuitable for agriculture. The town and village associations intent to develop the tanety for afforestation in order to produce timber service as well as fuel wood for energy supply to Antananarivo and the surrounding towns.

The project relies on the motivation of the town and village associations of the two concerned fokontany, sharing a common interest for afforestation of the envisaged surfaces.
