Description of the Project :

[Based on the Project Idea Note of 30 July 2009]

The objective of this small-scale project is to substitute three generators running on fossil fuel with a cogeneration power plant which is fuelled by the wood residues of the neighbouring sawmill.

Today the sawmill of Bambidie, run by the Compagnie Equatoriale du Bois (CEB), Precious Woods Gabon, a subsidiary of the Precious Woods group, together with the employees’ village, rely on three diesel generators for power supply as they are not connected to the grid.

The project consists of the production of electricity with a thermoelectric steam turbine using wood residues from the wood processing of the sawmill. The wood residues will be transported to the chipper and then left to dry in a silo for a few days. The silo will also serves as warehouse when the sawmill needs maintenance. After drying, the chips will be used to feed the boiler to produce the steam that drives the turbine. The cogeneration power plant will replace three diesel generators of 600, 900 and 1 000 kVA,  and provide enough heat for the dryers.

The Bambidie sawmill of Precious Wood Gabon processes about 60 000 m3 of round wood each year, producing 40 000 m3 of wood residues and saw dust. Wood residues are currently partially used for heat production to dry wood dryers. What is not used for heat production is burned in the open field, causing air pollution and being a threat to human health. Wood processed is primarily Okoume with an energy content of 9 450 kJ/kg and a moisture content of 45%.

The project involves the installation of a 1.5MW steam turbine that can produce up to 6 500 MWh per year. However, only 4 000 MWh are needed to feed the electricity demand. Around 600MWh will feed by the plant itself while 3 400 MWh will be fed to the sawmill and the neighbouring village and accounted for as GHG emission reductions.

The CDM project is planned to be registered under the Gold Standard.
