[Based on the Project Idea Note of July 2009]
The objective of the project is to use biomass, i.e. sawmill waste not valorised to date, which otherwise would have decomposed - as is the case at the moment -, to co-generate electricity and heat. The project is supported by the Société Forestière et Industrielle de la Doumé (SFID, Cameroonian subsidiary of the Rougier Group) and is based on the construction and implementation of a new co-generation unit based on sawmill waste with a capacity of net output power of 1 MW in the sawmill in Mbang.
The electricity generated would allow to operate the sawmill. The heat-surplus after electricity production feeds the sawmill’s kiln dryer (total installed capacity of 1 700 m3). The project permits to substitute diesel fuel previously used to produce electricity and replace it by biomass that is widely available. In addition, large amounts of the used biomass would have decomposed under anaerobic conditions in the baseline scenario, generating significant methane emissions which are dangerous to the climate. The project thus also contributes to the avoidance of methane emissions.
