Description of the Project :

The province of Adamawa (North Cameroon), which belongs to the phytogeographic area of Sahel-Sudan(fragile ecosystems), is prone to natural and anthropogenic pressures.

The socio-economic development puts pressure on the environment, which endangers the ecologic sustainability in this part of the country. Poverty and especially the high price of conventional energy sources promote the uncontrolled consumption of wood by massive cutting in order to improve living conditions of rural and peri-urban populations. This practice, especially in gallery forests, diminishes the capacity of water retention in the Adamawa Plateau, which is a significant water reservoir in Cameroon.

The project consists of 500 ha reforestation and of the recovery of the soil and water balance of degraded lands (herbaceous or shrubby savannah). This degradation is a result of overgrazing, uncontrolled cutting of fuelwood, bushfires and slash and burn agriculture. The reforestation has the aim of gaining exotic and local essences for multiple purposes such as fruit, fodder, firewood, or timber.
