CASCADe 2007-2011

Since 2007, CASCADe has assisted project developers and national climate institutions in making carbon projects from forests and farmlands a reality in rural Africa. Here you will find CASCADe’s experience gathered over the past 4 years, including lessons learnt and perspectives for the further development of forestry, bio-energy and REDD carbon projects in Africa.

The CASCADe Programme

This UNEP Programme aims at enhancing expertise to generate carbon credits in land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) as well as bioenergy activities in Sub-Saharan African countries. The programme provides a hands-on, learning by doing approach in which local developers are given the opportunity to develop and prepare Project Idea Notes (PINs), Carbon Finance Documents (CFDs) and/or Project Design Documents (PDDs) through direct technical assistance and capacity building to pilot projects.

Pilot projects are supported in each of the following seven target countries: Benin, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali and Senegal. Assistance includes institutional support, training workshops, and both regional and international knowledge transfer. Pilot projects in sectors such as plantation forestry, community agro forestry, and biofuels will open up opportunities for African participation in the CDM and the voluntary carbon market. In addition, the project facilitates the establishment of a stakeholder network for technical cooperation and linkages between buyers and sellers. The Programme was launched in December 2007 at the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia. The duration of the Programme is three years.

The initiative is jointly implemented by UNEP and UNEP Risoe Centre, in partnership with the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (le Centre de coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement or CIRAD), ONF International, ERM and Winrock International. The Programme is funded by the French Global Environment Facility.
